Reading and Phonics

At Alvanley and Manley Village School we use Read Write Inc Phonics (RWI) to give your child the best possible start with their Literacy development. We aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who enjoy reading and love books!

We can achieve this together through:

· Read Write Inc, a program to help to your child read at school

· Encouraging children to develop a love of books by reading to them daily, at home and at school

· Giving children access to a wide range of books at school and at home

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.

How will my child be taught to read?

We start by teaching phonics to the children in Class 1. This means that they learn how to ‘read’ the sounds in words and how those sounds can be written down. This is essential for reading, but it also helps children learn to spell well. We teach the children simple ways of remembering these sounds and letters using pictures and rhymes.

Once the sounds are secure, we teach the children to blend the sounds to read words. Once word reading is secure, they move onto ‘Ditties’ and then simple story books.

Each child reads at least three times a week with an adult in school. Then they bring this book home to practice fluency, along with a ‘Book Bag’ book at their level and a library book to share with an adult.

We ask parents to record home reading using the Boom Reader App.

Mrs Adams, our English and Phonics Leader, runs regular phonics and reading workshops to help parents support their child/children at home. Look out for dates on our newsletters.
