At Alvanley and Manley Village School, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and physical well-being of all our pupils. To help us achieve this, our school participates in Operation Encompass—a national police and education safeguarding initiative.
What is Operation Encompass?
Operation Encompass is a partnership between local police forces and schools designed to provide early support to children who have experienced or been exposed to domestic abuse incidents.
Research shows that children living in homes where domestic abuse occurs can be deeply affected, even if they were not directly involved. By enabling quick communication between the police and school, Operation Encompass ensures that school staff are informed so we can offer immediate, compassionate support tailored to the child's needs.
How Operation Encompass Works at Our School
Secure police notification: If the police are called to an incident of domestic abuse where a child from our school was present, the police notify our Headteacher prior to the start of the next school day.
Key adults: Information is shared confidentially and only with trained Key Adults within the school (typically our DSL or Deputy DSL).
Timely support: Knowing about an incident allows us to extend discreet, practical, and emotional support to the child immediately. This might involve giving them extra time, a quiet space if they feel overwhelmed, extra patience, or simply a warm welcome at the school gate.
Confidentiality: All notifications are handled with strict privacy and sensitivity. Information is stored securely alongside our confidential safeguarding records and is never shared beyond key staff who need to know to protect the child.

Operation Encompass is designed to be supportive, not intrusive. It allows us to build a gentle safety net around children when they need it most, ensuring school remains a safe, predictable, and nurturing environment every single day.
