Prevent Duty

The Prevent Duty

At Alvanley and Manley Village School, the safety, well-being, and personal development of every pupil are our highest priorities. As part of our commitment to safeguarding, we fulfill our statutory duty under the DfE’s Prevent Strategy.

What is the Prevent Duty?

The Prevent duty is a national safeguarding obligation placed on all schools, early years providers, and public bodies in the UK. Its aim is to protect children and young people from the risk of radicalisation, extremist influences, and being drawn into terrorism.

Just as we safeguard children from physical harm, bullying, or online risks, Prevent ensures we act early to protect children from harmful ideologies that promote hatred or violence.

How We Implement Prevent in School

We embed the Prevent duty into our everyday school life through a supportive, inclusive, and balanced approach:

  • Promoting Core Values: We foster mutual respect, tolerance, individual liberty, democratic principles, and the rule of law through our everyday ethos and assembly themes.

  • An Inclusive Curriculum: Through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) lessons, children learn to think critically, respect differences, recognize safe boundaries, and build resilience against negative influences.

  • Safe Online Environment: We maintain strict internet filtering and monitoring on all school devices, alongside teaching robust online safety lessons.

  • Staff Training: All school staff receive regular safeguarding training to recognize early signs of vulnerability, changes in behaviour, or exposure to harmful content.

  • A Culture of Openness: We create a safe space where children feel heard, valued, and comfortable asking questions or sharing concerns.

Working Together with Families

Prevent is about early intervention and support—not judgment or surveillance. If school staff ever have a concern regarding a child’s safety or exposure to extreme views, we work openly and supportively with parents and relevant local safeguarding partners, just as we would with any other welfare concern.

If you have any questions about the Prevent duty or wish to speak to a member of our safeguarding team, please contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Mrs Cupples via the school office.
